Southampton Basketball Club have launched their new Junior Blazers Basketball Development Programme for girls and boys aged between 6 and 16years in partnership with Jewson, the UKs leading supplier of building materials.
After receiving a cheque from Mr Richard Sheath, Area Sales Manager for Jewson at a special presentation at Fleming Park Leisure Centre, Eastleigh, Sylvain Donneaud, Senior Blazers Head Coach commented:
“There has been a lack of opportunity for youngsters to play basketball in England! In my homeland France and in other European countries, as well as USA & Canada, basketball is thriving. It’s a great game to play for people of all ages and a very dynamic and entertaining spectator sport. We aim to introduce high numbers of young players to the game, whilst creating leagues where they can enjoy competition and excel.”
Junior Blazer developments are already in place in Southampton, Romsey, Eastleigh and Chandlers Ford with Winchester opening soon. More centres will open as the programme rolls out.
The first tournament held in Mountbatten School, Romsey on Sunday saw around 50 under 12s, both boys and girls competing. A delighted Club Secretary Trevor Gill stated after the tournament, “this is something we have long wanted to do, thanks to Jewson it has become possible. The event today was a huge success, it was hectic at times but the large number of parents who came up to me at the end to tell me how much the children enjoyed it made it all worthwhile.”
